  16. <p>The head Guardian Angel admits some of his heroics were lies
  17. </p>
  18. <p>     First Superman dies and now this. Curtis Sliwa, founder and
  19. leader of the crime-fighting, beret-wearing volunteer group
  20. known as the Guardian Angels, says six of the group's early
  21. exploits were just publicity stunts. The hoaxes, which Sliwa
  22. says ended in 1980, ranged from a kidnapping Sliwa blamed on
  23. cops to a story about a wallet returned to an elderly mugging
  24. victim. The Angels have long been controversial, and some press
  25. reports allege Sliwa has yet to own up to all such misdeeds.
  26. Still, Sliwa says his honor is intact: "My reputation in New
  27. York was almost mythically heroic, and this is just a hard
  28. reality check." Hard indeed. He says his Angel wife Lisa
  29. launched a spinning, kung-fu kick at his face when he told her
  30. about his fabrications.
